Ft. Wayne 2011 Christmas Bird Count - Bob and Ann added four species (Turkey Vulture, E. Screech Owl, Brown Creeper (whew! we didn't miss it for the first time ever!), and White-crowned Sparrow while feeder watching. And at the chili supper, I undercounted by one. So the species total this year is 51, a bit low but in the normal range for recent years.
Highlight was of course the Rufous Hummingbird, the first record in the 51 years of the Ft. Wayne count, bringing the all-time species total to 124. (Now, if we could just get them all in the same year . . .) Open water allowed us to record a number of other species rarely found on the count:
Second record: Ring-necked Duck . . . . . Third record: Cackling Goose, Gadwall, Bald Eagle
Fourth record: Hooded Merganser . . . . . Fifth record: Chipping Sparrow (and the first since 1982)
And, of course, we missed a number of species that are usually found. Thanks to all who participated in the count.

Seven people participated in today's Stockbridge Audubon field trip to Bixler Lake Park, Kendallville (B below), and Gene Stratton Porter State Historic Site, Rome City (P below), on a morning that began cold and cloudy and cleared after 11 a.m. The day started well when, shortly after arriving at Bixler Lake, we found a nice flock that contained 7 species of warblers plus other birds along the park road. With such a start, we were anticipating a good day. Sadly, that was it. We found very little along the Bixler nature trail, and even less at GS Porter. The day's total, all birds in Noble Co., was 49 species, 7 warblers. This has been a terrible fall for songbird migrants in northeastern Indiana.

Fox Island & Eagle Marsh. .. .Bird -- List. .. Sat, Sept. 10, '11
Seventeen birders turned out for Stockbridge Audubon Society's field trip to Fox Island County Park, Allen Co., on a morning that began cloudy and a bit foggy, then cleared and became warm. We split into two parties, since with one group that large, people in the rear on a forest trail don't see many of the birds. The combined total for the two groups was 69 species, but birds were in low numbers.
After a field lunch, I went to Eagle Marsh and met Eric and Mary Helfrich, who had the same idea. The BLACK-NECKED STILT found yesterday was still there, feeding along the west side of the pumphouse dike. However, there was little else of interest. There was one late Green Heron, and the only other shorebirds were Killdeer, one Semipalmated Plover, and two Lesser Yellowlegs. The Fox Island list:

Spring Field Trips - 2011
Willow Slough FWA/Kankakee Sands. . . rd -- Lis. .Sat, May 28, '11
Stockbridge Audubon Society's field trip to Newton County today was a fitting finale to our spring field trip schedule: cloudy (as usual), rain (as usual), surprisingly cold (as usual), and windy (as usual). Clouds and a chilly wind suppressed singing and bird activity in the morning. Rain began just as we reached the east end of Murphey Lake, and ended just after we returned to the cars. After a break, we drove home through steady rain.
Still, the seven of us managed to find 89 species, including most of our target birds and a bonus: one CATTLE EGRET along IN hwy. 14 in Pulaski County on the way over. Big misses were Blue Grosbeak, Least Bittern (thanks, rain), and migrant shorebirds, of which we found none, even in the 400 and 400 wetland.Newton Co. highlights:

And then we stopped for ice cream at the Fair Oaks dairy, conveniently located along Highway 14. That is getting to be a new Stockbridge tradition, and a good one! - - Cynthia
Magee Marsh Wildlife Area, OH. . . . . Bird -- List . . . . . Saturday, May 21, 2010
Eight people departed Ft. Wayne as a group for the Stockbridge Audubon field trip to Magee Marsh, Ohio, on May 21. We were joined at Magee by six more, two individuals and two couples, all of whom had come on their own schedules at different times and met us there, making fourteen people on the field trip. The day list, including some species seen by the separate arrivals before they joined us, was about 109 species.
Although the overall species total was excellent, the Magee bird trail had relatively few birds for May. But it is very good even on an off day. We found 20 species of warblers, including Mourning, Canada, and Prothonotary, and I think everyone had a good look at Yellow-bellied Flycatcher. A large flock of Dunlins put on quite an aerial show, wheeling around just off the beach, while six Ruddy Turnstones sat on a jetty. The stars of the day, though, were two FISH CROWS that flew over the parking lot while we were putting away our lunches and getting ready to go back onto the bird trail. Since the group was a bit scattered and otherwise occupied, quite a few did not see or hear these very rare vagrants to Lake Erie. The other exceptional bird of the day was a male YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD on the way to Metzger Marsh, where we saw Common Moorhens, among others.- - Jim Haw
Fox Island - Allen County Park . . . .Bird -- List. . Sat, May 7, 2011
It was a dark, cloudy morning, but the rain held off. Twenty-two people showed up for Stockbridge Audubon Society's field trip to Fox Island County Park. It was a somewhat frustrating morning for many; a lot of birds were just dark silhouettes against the sky, and quite a few "heard only" birds sang only once or twice. We divided into two groups (thanks, Rodger Rang, for leading the other one) and found a combined total of 91 species in the park, 24 warblers.

Salamonie Reservoir . . . .Bird -- List. . Sat, April 30, 2011
Twelve members of Stockbridge Audubon Society joined today's field trip to Salamonie Reservoir. We recorded 81 species, but numbers and variety of migrants were disappointing. We spent a cloudy, rather chilly and breezy morning in Salamonie River State Forest but found relatively few birds there. The skies cleared and it became sunny by 2 p.m., but by then high winds dampened bird activity. Very high water in the reservoir prevented us from getting to Five Ponds area, one of our standby spots. And I think that there were simply a lot fewer birds than one would expect at the end of April.

Kankakee FWA . . . .Bird -- List. . Sat, March 12, 2011
Ten birders kicked off Stockbridge Audubon Society's spring field trip schedule with a very successful day of birding at Kankakee: 55 species and a lot of very good birds in a frigid, howling wind that killed woodland songbird activity. Thanks to Sam Plew for telling us about the Whooping Crane, and to Jeff McCoy for calling about the Dunlin.
