Salamonie
Nine members of the Stockbridge Audubon Chapter enjoyed a cool day of birding at the Salamonie Reservoir on Saturday, April 24, 2021. As usual the group met at the Forks of the Wabash Property in Huntington County and then enjoyed the "scenic" route to Salamonie along the River Road through Andrews, Indiana. Highlights of the day included an Osprey working the Wabash River along River Road. We then ran into the Mississinewa Audubon Chapter who joined us for a few minutes at the Spillway. We enjoyed a Wilson's Snipe flyover multiple times, hearing the "hu-hu-hu" winnow and having heard a Prairie Warbler for several minutes, the male finally popped up and provided long distance binocular views for both groups. We ended our day at Lost Bridge East on the recommendation from the Mississinewa Chapter of nesting Bald Eagles. And always appreciating a "round" number we left Salamonie with only 63 species and hoping for 65, we were able to add the final two for our day list on the drive back to The Forks in Huntington. A special shout-out to Andrew Wolfe for sharing his knowledge of the area and of course for his skill in birding by ear.
