April 27, 2013 Salamonie Reservoir
Twenty participants in Stockbridge Audubon Society/ Robert Cooper Audubon Society's joint field trip to Salamonie enjoyed very unusual weather: sunny and warm. Birds were not numerous, and some esxpected summer residents (e.g., Prairie, Cerulean, and Kentucky Warblers) were not found. The reservoir is currently 22.5 feet above summer pool. With the extensive flooding, we were not able to get into some of the best areas. Still, we recorded 75 species. Notable were a Blackpoll Warbler, NE IN's earliest spring record by 2 days, an Am. Tree Sparrow, one day short of the latest spring record, and 2 Broad-winged Hawks. We watched one hawk as it flew up from the ground with a snake in its talons, perched on a branch and ate it.
