Chain O'Lakes State Park
Stockbridge Audubon Society had nine birders on our field trip to Chain O' Lakes State Park in Noble County yesterday. The weather was perfect, and we had enough bird song that it was sometimes difficult to separate one call from all the others that we were hearing. With the foliage being so thick, we had to do most of our birding by ear (Thanks for the help, Dave Reichlinger!), but we were still lucky enough to get some good looks at many birds. One great sighting was an Osprey that put on quite a show at our very first stop as it patrolled Norman Lake, and flew low right over our heads. Another nice sighting was along Trail 7, when a Pileated Woodpecker flew low past the group, and then started working some downed trees right in plain view for all of us to see!
It was also a very good day for not-feathered critters - We were watching a Beaver relaxing beside his favorite tree trunk on Dock Lake when a pair of Minks started chasing each other back and forth right in front of our eyes. We also had an awesome look at a large Black Rat Snake sunning in a low bush right along Trail . We ended our day with the following 73 Species:
Canada Goose 25
Wood Duck 4
Mourning Dove 1
Ruby-throated Hummingbird 1
