May 2, 2015 Salamonie Reservoir
Eleven members of Stockbridge Audubon Society enjoyed a beautiful, and very successful day at Salamonie Reservoir (Huntington and Wabash Counties) today. We found a total of 87 species, including a few really nice surprises. Though we were near either the lake or the river for most of the day, we never saw our first Mallard until our very last stop.
Our list of species includes six raptors, all the Woodpeckers, except for Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, four Vireos, eleven Warblers, and nine Sparrows.
Or best birds of the day were a late RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, a LARK SPARROW, and a YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD.
Field trip leaders: Sandy Schacht and John Winebrenner.
Following is a partial list:
Raptors: Turkey Vulture, Bald Eagle, Cooper's Hawk, Red-shouldered Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk, American Kestrel.
Woodpeckers: Red-headed, Red-bellied, Downy, Hairy, Northern Flicker, and Pileated.
Vireos: White-eyed, Yellow-throated, Warbling, and Red-eyed.
Swallows: Purple Martin, Tree, Northern Rough-winged, Cliff, and Barn.
Warblers: Nashville, Northern Parula, Yellow, Yellow-rumped, Black-throated Green, Yellow-throated (several), Pine, Prairie, Palm, Louisiana Waterthrush, and Common Yellowthroat.
Sparrows: Eastern Towhee, Chipping, Field, Vesper, Lark, Savannah, Song, White-throated, and White-crowned.
