Lake Michigan lakefront
We set off from Ft Wayne with nine birders, picking up more along the way for a total of 12. Michigan City harbor seemed strangely quiet, but with a few good birds. We cruised down Beverly Drive in light rain, without really stopping. Lakeview in the National Lakeshore was a convenient rest stop, and a chance to say hello to Jeff McCoy, et al, but the prospect of Red Crossbills lure us on, so we didn't stay long. At Indian Dunes State Park, we had a flyover of crossbills, identified by their chatter more than visually; then it started to rain in earnest.
That seemed to be a good time for lunch. But with the crossbill being a life bird for about half our group, we returned to the park for a better look. We didn't get a better look at first, so we repaired to the Nature Center to watch feeders for a while. Finally, our bird returned to the tops of the tall pines near the entrance kiosk, and all got good scope looks.
