Lake Michigan lakefront
September 7, 2019
Six birders met at oh-dark-hundred and headed for the Lake Michigan lakefront.
An apparent accident blocked all lanes of US 30 near Wanatah, delaying us and preventing our traditional rest room/donut stop. We found restrooms and refreshments further along and went on to Forsythe Park, where we ran into Ken Brock and fewer migrant birds than we expected.
We moved on to Lakefront Park. Again, fewer birds than we hoped for.
Going on eastward, we encountered roadwork that send us off in a direction we didn't want to go, and got us lost, until technology came to our aid. By then, we were running out of time to visit all the sites we had planned for. We made one more stop, the Nature Center at Indiana Dunes State Park.
Besides the birds listed below, we saw on the way or between stops Mourning Dove, Killdeer, Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, Turkey Vulture, and American Kestrel, for a total of 45 species. Our best bird of the day was probably Blue-winged Warbler.
